Ulf Wakenius nació en Halmstad, Suecia en 1958. Empezó a tocar la guitarra con sólo 11 años. Al principio se inspiraba en los más virtuosos guitarristas de blues, pero pronto su estilo se movió hacia un terreno más jazzístico. Con 17 años ya tocaba con varios grupos suecos de jazz. Durante los años siguientes viajó por toda Europa.
A principios de los años 80 fundó el dúo “Guitars Unlimited” junto con Peter Almqvis y a mediados de los ochenta recibió la oportunidad de grabar un álbum en solitario en Río de Janeiro, Brasil. Aquella “aventura brasileña” fue el principio de un amor hacia la cultura de aquel país que ha conservado siempre. Más tarde volvería con Oscar Peterson, para ofrecer un concierto delante de 35.000 personas en Sao Paulo.
Durante la década de los 90 trabajó en varios proyectos junto con grandes músicos americanos y europeos. Ulf ha firmado 10 álbumes en solitario y ha grabado varios como acompañante junto con otras leyendas del jazz.
Ulf Wakenius es, desde 1997, guitarrista en el legendario cuarteto de Oscar Peterson. Entre sus precursores están Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, y Joe Pass. Ha tocado en salas tan emblemáticas como el Carnegie Hall, el Hollywood Bowl, el Blue Notes… Y últimamente agotaron entradas con Oscar Peterson al Royal Albert Hall, al Chicago Symphony Hall, en el Palais Des Congres…
En 2003 ofreció un concierto a dúo con Pat Metheny en el Jazz Baltica en Alemania. Su último trabajo ha sido “Notes From The Heart”, interpretando a la guitarra la música de Keith Jarrett.
Ha tocado y grabado con los grandes del mundo del jazz: Oscar Peterson, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Ray Brown, Michael Brecker, Joe Henderson, Phil Woods, Clark Terry, Johnny Griffin, Toots Thielemans, Jack DeJohnette, Max Roach, Jim Hall, Art Farmer, Benny Golson, James Moody, Hank Jones, Roy Hargrove and Michel Legrand.
Ha grabado dos CDs con el gran Ray Brown: “Seven Steps To Heaven” que se convirtió en número 1 en las listas de ventas de jazz de los Estados Unidos, y “Summertime“ que fue votado como uno de los diez mejores álbumes del año en América. También ha ofrecido conciertos con su propio grupo, acompañado por artistas de la talla de Mike Brecker, Ray Brown y Joey Calderazzo. Últimamente ha estado de gira por Europa con la emergente estrella vocal Viktoria Tolstoy.

Ulf Wakenius was born in Halmstad, Sweden on 1958. He began playing the guitar at the age of 11. In the beginning he was inspired by virtuoso electric blues guitar players but soon moved to more jazz-orientated music. At the age of 17 Ulf was already established as a jazz musician playing with different Swedish groups. During the following years he toured all over Europe. In the beginning of the ’80s Ulf founded the duo "Guitars Unlimited" together with Peter Almqvist.
In the mid-’80s Ulf also received the opportunity to record a solo album in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The "Brazil venture" was the beginning of a life-long love of the Brazilian culture. Later Ulf returned with Oscar Peterson and performed for 35,000 people in Sao Paolo.
In the beginning of the ’90s Ulf started to work in different projects together with American and European top musicians. Ulf has 10 solo albums to his name and has recorded several albums as a sideman together with many jazz legends.

At 2003 he performed in a highly successful duo concert with Pat Metheny at Jazz Baltica in Germany. His latest release was “Notes from the Heart”, playing the music of Keith Jarrett on guitar.

He has also toured with his own groups featuring: Mike Brecker, Ray Brown and Joey Calderazzo. Lately he has also been touring Europe with upcoming vocal star Viktoria Tolstoy.
